The cognitive test battery in BASE contains 14 tests measuring five intellectual abilities (perceptual speed, reasoning, memory, knowledge, fluency). At the 5th measurement point 8 out of the original 14 tests were included in the assessment.
Knowledge was measured by the following three tests:
a) Spot-a-Word (20 items). On 20 occasions participants
had to find out which one of five presented items selected from a
German vocabulary test (Lehrl, 1977) (one word, four pronounceable
non-words) was the word. The test score corresponds to the number of
correct answers.
b) Vocabulary. Participants were asked to explain 16 words
selected from the Vocabulary subtest of the German WAIS version
(HAWIE; Wechsler, 1982). Responses were coded by two raters on the
following scale: wrong (= 0), partially correct (= 1), or correct (=
2).
c) Practical Knowledge (12 items). The format of this test
follows the Vocabulary subtest of the German WAIS version, but the
items were created by the psychology unit of BASE. Participants had
to answer questions concerning everyday life. Responses were coded by
two raters on the follwing scale: wrong (= 0), partially correct (=
1), or correct (= 2).
For more detailed information about the procedures, see Lindenberger, Mayr, and Kliegl, (1993) or the "Intelligenz und Kognition" documentation at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.
(See also General Intelligence, Perceptual Speed, Fluency, Memory, Reasoning).
